For so many of us, this ritual is how the day begins. But have you ever stopped to wonder what kind of impact that cup has, not just on you, but on the world around you? What if your morning coffee could do more than wake you up? What if it could help protect Scarlet Tanagers, Wood Thrush, warblers, and countless other birds that depend on healthy forests to survive?
Well, the good news is, it can!! That’s the benefit of Smithsonian Bird Friendly® Coffee. Developed by the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center, it is the most rigorous certification for environmentally responsible coffee, and it turns an everyday habit into an act of conservation.
Most coffee today is “sun-grown,” produced by clearing forests to plant coffee in the open sun. This method might increase yields in the short term, but it comes at a steep cost. Sun-grown plantations typically only support only one-quarter of the birds species that Bird Friendly® farms support. Shade-grown coffee, often promoted as a better choice, is an improvement but the term has no consistent standards. Farms may keep minimal tree cover, still use pesticides, or lack the plant diversity that makes a forest thrive. On average, shade-grown farms support about 79 bird species, better than sun-grown (61), but nowhere near the rich, forest-like conditions required for Bird Friendly® coffee, which have been shown to support upwards of 243 species.
Bird Friendly® coffee sets the gold standard. To earn the certification, farms must not only be certified USDA Organic, meaning no harmful pesticides or fertilizers are used, but they must also meet the most stringent shade criteria. This includes maintaining a tall tree canopy at least 12 meters high, with enough density to filter at least 40 percent of sunlight. They must also support at least 10 different tree species, three distinct canopy layers and have at least 60% native vegetation. These standards make Bird Friendly® farms more than coffee plantations; they are thriving habitats that mirror natural forests.
The benefits go beyond birds. Studies show that birds on these farms act as natural pest control, helping reduce insect damage without the need for harmful chemicals. Plus, the farmers benefit as well. Shade-grown systems allow them to diversify their income by harvesting fruit, timber, or honey, or by welcoming eco-tourism. They also earn better prices by accessing specialty markets for Bird Friendly® beans, and many farms carry Fair Trade certification too, ensuring stronger protections for families and communities.
And then there’s the coffee itself. Coffee plants evolved to grow in shade, and when they are forced into full sun they ripen too quickly. The result is often a more acidic or bitter bean. In shade, coffee matures slowly, developing deeper, more complex flavors. The result is a smoother, richer cup that’s easier on the stomach and more pleasurable to sip!
